Keep things up to date:

Keeping software, both Microsoft Windows software, and other software you regularly use up to date is a good way of keeping your PC running smoothly. For security purposes, always make sure that your Windows installation (95/98/XP/Vista) is up to date. See the links page for the link to the Microsoft Windows Update page.

Anti-virus software:

Make sure your anti-virus software is also up to date. Scan your computer viruses regularly, and make sure that any files that you have downloaded or been given by someone else has been scanned with your anti-virus program.

Firewall software:

Install a firewall on your computer. It will automatically prevent hackers and others from accessing information on your PC, and/or taking over your computer.

Keep your computer clean:

Computers get dirty like everything else, so keep your computer as clean as you can. Keep food and drink away from the keyboard, and mouse, and if you have a mouse with a mouseball, clean it regularly.

Ventilation:

Computers can get overheated if not given enough ventilation, and this can lead to more crashes and an unstable operating system. Make sure theres enough room around the pc for heat to escape - especially from the back.

Avoid Spam as much as you can:

Avoid opening e-mails that come from unknown sources, or that just sound or feel suspicious. They can be the gateway for all sorts of nasty programs or viruses that can ruin your computer, or cause no end of problems like slowing down your computer. Also never forward suspicious e-mails. This may cause the unnecessary spread of an unwanted virus or similar program. If spam of any kind is causing you major headaches, register with a free e-mail service such as Hotmail or Gmail, and use that for online correspondence or general internet activities. Keep your personal e-mail address for friends and family only.
